When my mother died, we found several diaries in her dresser drawer. Ranging from the time she was 13 years old to when they were first rounded up and shipped off to Tulare Assembly center, the diaries portrayed a normal, young American girl coming of age in a small, agricultural town on the coast of California. Yet her circumstances were anything but normal. As an American born, citizen of Japanese descent, she was caught up in the hysteria of fear after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.
