Letters from the Lake

Dear Marjorie,

I’m so happy you hit it off with the boy from town that’s working with you! I couldn’t read his name, but it looked like Dustin? What a cool name! And you’re detasseling corn? What’s that? I live in the country, but we don’t have that going on here. This is more lake country, so ask me something about lakes. Ha ha.

Our Douglas County Fair finished up this morning, when all the exhibits came down and the fat hog sale took place. My hog got a red ribbon and he sold to the local grocery store! It’s a good thing I didn’t get too fond of Porky, because I would guess in a week or two he will be in the grocery store refrigerated case. We have this contest called Showmanship, and I did pretty well in that. That’s where I had to have Porky go left and right, forward and stop with the cane. I got a blue ribbon.

My sewing project got a blue ribbon—I made a long nightgown that was white cotton with little flowers on it and a bright yellow flannel robe with a yellow ribbon at the waist. I had to model it—did you model your wrap-around skirt? I was so embarrassed to model a nightgown!! But another girl modeled a pair of shorty pajamas—that would have been even more embarrassing.

I did make a Hamburger Hotdish with Tater Tots. I thought it turned out pretty good, but don’t you know that everybody seemed to have thought the same, so there were quite a few Tater Tot Hotdishes. Darn. I thought I was going to be special, but I guess not.

My favorite part was the carnival. My parents played bingo while I went on rides and played the games. I won a baby chick. It’s so cute, and still fuzzy yellow.

Are you going to go to the State Fair? I was an alternate to go to the State Fair—I have a pretty good chance of going, but I won’t know for sure until Monday. Our delegation stays at the 4-H Building—they have dorms upstairs. I’d be going to model my nightgown! Oh, my! But I hear there are a lot of boys that go, too. Sweet!

I didn’t have to work this weekend at Lynn Haven Resort because of the fair. I’ll be back at it Monday.

I am anxious to hear more about this detasseling business, and about how your fair was. I look forward to your letters.

Love,

Irene
